# 402: View as Webpage Thumbnails

Hi,

I'm using win98. I have a folder where I have all my images. I set it to be viewed as a webpage so that I can just arrow down the images and on the left in the white space, it will show a thumbnail of the picture so that I don't have to open each image individually. I am able to view as Thumbnails, but I'd prefer the other way back. Any ideas how I can get this back?

Thanks much.

Open Windows Explorer. Click on VIEW then select FOLDER OPTIONS and choose what option you want.

Good Luck!

No that is not what I wanted. I don't want to view my desktop as a webpage. I want to view a folder within explorer as a webpage and arrow down through the images and see the image in the left border of the folder page.

when i defrag my hard drive there are a cluster of files that according to the legend are (files that will not be moved) and (files that belong @ front or back of drive) What are these and can i get rid of them?

You can not move or delete these clusters.
The clusters at the beginning or end of the drive are placed there for two reasons: 1) to improve performance, e.g. the Windows Swap (called WIN386.SWP in Windows9x and pagefile.sys in WindowsNT) file is placed at the end of the drive to prevent fragmentation and performance loss, or 2) becuase the files must exist in those specific locations:
They are marked unmovable because they may contain FAT information (or Volue information in NTFS) and are required to operate the file system, or contain critical boot files such as IO.SYS / (MSDOS.SYS), or NTLDR / NTDETECT.COM / SYSTEM.INI. The system boot sector or Master Boot Record can not be moved else the BIOS will not be able to boot the disk.

By request, I formatted a friend's hard drive and restored Win98. When I was installing the software for her modem; Win98 crashed and when it rebooted; the C: drive contained absolutely no files. She told me she has virus W32.Magistr....

Surely, the virus didn't do all that damage? She is ready to replace her motherboard or buy a new computer?

Isn't it possible to fdisk; format and restore this hard drive somehow?

That virus can't damage your hardware.
Try Formatting the Hard Drive from a CLEAN (non infected) Windows 98 boot disk
Type "format C: /s" from the DOS prompt and reinstall Windows to ensure that the virus is gone.
If you need more information on W32.Magistr and its many strains, visit www.sarc.com and do a search in the Virus Encyclopedia.
Note: Formatting the drive removes all the Files contained on it.
If necessary, remove the Partition using FDISK
... AND run "FDISK /MBR" to repair the Master Boot Records. (a Virus scanner can also repair the boot records)

I would get a copy of a virus scan that is on floppys and scan the computer for the virus. Make sure you boot off the floopy.
http://www.europe.f-secure.com/virus-info/wild.shtml
Well the above is a list of all virus found to date. Their are 3 listed with names close to yours. Two are not nice ones to have the other is not all that bad. The 2 bad ones will hide in memory so a format will not get rid of them.

you can also get information from www.hackfix.org
I would not try and reinstall again untill you scan the hole computer for virus.

# 363: RE: Defragmenting the C drive.

The reason for this is there is a program on your computer that is accessing the harddrive while you are trying to defragment. To stop this behavior you will need to shutdown any programs you have running in the background such as an antivirus program. To tell what programs are running in the background look in the system tray. That is the area where the clock is on the task bar. If there are any icons there other than the clock then there are programs running in the background.

Good Luck!

This server is in a high school that has several computer science students. Before server I used reg files on each client to lock desktop, network applet, printers and a few other tamper items. I want to use logon scripts for student accounts to run the reg files and a logon script for admin types to reverse the reg controls.

Thanks for your help; I couldn't find lavasoft but I did install the pop-up stopper from the previous response; it seems to work well.

However, it still doesn't explain why these pop-up's were coming in the first place. Explorer doesn't even have to be open and these ads would just pop up.

I don't get it.

Believe it or not, the adware and spyware actually install programs on the computer that independently access the web and supply you with these opportunities to waste your money. Probably made a few software hacker-engineers into millionaires.

They don't need a browser; just an available connection. You might like to find and install ZoneAlarm; it stops unauthorized communication in or out of your system. It's a personal "firewall".

Hi All,

Was wondering if there is some help out there for someone who is becoming frustrated with the Explore option from the Start menu. Running Win 98SE and whenever I right click the Start button and select Explore it opens the Start folder. I never need anything in this folder and would prefer if it would open something like the My Documents folder.

Any suggestions????

the explore option lets you open an explorer view of whatever your cursor points to. try it on a folder, it will open the folder in a new window for you to 'explore'.

thus when you do it on the start bar it opens the start folder for you to explore.

if you want to examine you 'my documents' it should be on your desktop.

UNINSTALL YOUR CURRENT DISPLAY ADAPTER AND CHANGE IT TO THE DEFAULT STANDARD VGA DISPLAY ADAPTER. RESTART YOUR WINDOWS OS. ONCE IT IS DONE TRY AND REINSTALL THE DISPLAY DRIVER OF YOUR GRAPHIC CARD. IF YOU ARE INSTALLING THE LATEST GRAPHIC DRIVERS FOR YOUR CARD YOU MIGHT AS WELL DOWNLOAD THE LATEST DIRECT X8 OR HIGHER (SOME DRIVERS WONT WORK PROPERLY OR WONT WORK AT ALL IF YOU DONT HAVE THE LATEST DIRECT X)

Last night I purchased a 500 mhz Pentium III, which was slightly used. Before I bought it, I watched the previous owner run windows, so I know that the computer worked. As soon as I got home, I formatted the hard drive, and then inserted a startup disk, but it said that it was an invalid startup disk, and to enter one that worked. I kept trying different disks, and different startup disks, since I have a couple computers, but it always gave me the same invalid system disk message. I am positive that these startup disks work because I have tried them on numerous computers. I bought this computer for my girlfriend, and I am just trying to set up windows and the basic stuff before I give it to her, but I can't do this when I have a formatted hard drive and I am unable to even boot to DOS or anything with a startup disk. I have already set the floppy drive to the first bootable drive, I have already set it to look for a floppy to start off of, and the floppy drive's green light turns on whenever it is searching the drive for a startup disk, so I know that it is communicating with the computer. I don't know what to do, and I could really use any help from anybody, and I would really appreciate it so much. Please reply or (preferably) write me an email at tcbeer@ucdavis.edu.

Thank you sooo much everybody.

Since the startup disc is recognized on your other computer your problem could be one of three things with the PIII 500.

1)The floppy drive could be damaged.
2)The floppy's data cable could be damaged.
3)The floppy drive port on the motherboard could be damaged.

To find out remove the floppy drive along with the data cable from the PIII 500. Remove the floppy drive along with the data cable from your other computer and install it in the PIII 500. Before connecting the data cable to the motherboard check for any bent or missing pins on the FDD port on the motherboard. Place your Startup disc in the floppy drive and turn on the PIII 500. If the startup disc is recognized then it is either the floppy drive or the data cable that is damaged on the original floppy drive. If the startup disc is not recognized then more than likely the FDD port is damaged on the motherboard which means you will need a new motherboard.

Good luck!

The first to reasons are correct, although less than complete.

Some software does leave chucks of its self in memory, eventually degrading system performance, how soon depends on both the ammount of RAM in the system and the software being used.

The e-mail concern is a matter of someone else using your computer when you are not there.(The company may have had a problem with this in the past.)

Other issues:

Some software defaults to the date of the last boot rather than the current system date. (This use to be a common 'trick' to keep the month end open on older accounting systems.)

Someone else using your work station for applications other than e-mail (copying data, using your station to view internet porn, etc).

Screen burn in.

Password security, depending on the operating system (NT or Win2000 as examples), may be date or time sensitive and could be defeated by failure to log off.

Not withstanding the above, it is quite possible that there is no valid reason at all (power conservation?) and that the company policy is a hold over from the days when some of these things were a concern, which leaves only one good reason:

'cause the boss says so.

I agree. There isn't really a good reason. It is really just personal preference.
I never shut down my computer at home or at work, but I have Windows 2000 installed which is much better with memory management.

The infamous blue screen is not a good sign my friend. What you can try is running it in safe mode and uninstalling or undoing what it was you last did before it appeared. From my personal experience the blue screen is not something easy to get rid off. Often i have needed to reinstall windows. Well I hope this helps. Good Luck.

Does anyone have any wonderful tips or information sources for choosing a good web hosting service??

I wonder if anyone out there can help me, I have an Epson 480 Colour Stylus Printer that I am about to throw out the window. Epson, as a marketing gimmick sells these things extremely cheap, but the kicker is....unless there is ink in both the colour and the black cartridges, one cannot print anything at all, even if there is no colour/black in the document you wish to print. Anyone know how to reconfigure the software to turn this annoying and I might add extremely expensive feature off????? Thanks.

Sometimes the design limitations of hardware do leave a lot to be desired. But you should not loose money because of this particular feature.

If you are printing only in black, for example, your colour cartridge will not be used. It needs to have ink in it but may not be empty for months yet, while the black ink tank may need replacing several times during that period.

I know this doesn't help you, but it may soothe.

Let us know if you do find a software workaround. I'm sure many others would like to know about this.

I doubt that the printer won't print, it is just that you are out of black ink. What I have done sometimes when I run out of black ink (and what I'm printing isn't that important), I copy the text to Microsoft Word and change the colour to Red (or some other colour) and then it prints fine.
I rarely print colour, so this is one way that I can prolong having to get a black cartridge.
